The main character of this game is Lara Croft, a woman who travels the world in search of forgotten artifacts and locations, frequently connected to supernatural powers.

Lara has been voiced and portrayed by many actresses in games: Shelley Blond, Judith Gibbens, Jonell Elliot, Keeley Hawes, and Camilla Luddington. Eight different real-life models have also portrayed her at promotional events.

In 1997, Lara Croft was featured in multiple comics produced by Top Cow Productions. Four official novels have been written between 2003 and 2005. An animated series titled Revisioned: Tomb Raider ran on TV between May and June 2007.

There have been two movie adaptions – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001, and The Cradle of Life in 2003 which both starred Angelina Jolie.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Let’s dig deeper into the movie production and find out why Jolie has been chosen to play Lara Croft.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was released in 2001 under a direction of Simon West, where Lara was trying to obtain ancient artifacts from the enemy, the Illuminati.

The first draft has been done in 1998 by Brent V. Friedman, then in 1999, it was re-written by Steven E. de Souza.

Prior to Jolie’s being cast in the role, numerous other actresses were rumored to be in consideration, most notably Demi Moore, and even UK nude model Linsey Dawn McKenzie. But as we know Jolie has been chosen over others.

Many fans felt Angelina Jolie was physically inappropriate to play the large-breasted heroine, while others complained about an American actress being hired to play a British character.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider received generally negative reviews, mostly because of a senseless plot and action sequences with no emotional impact. But besides all of that, with a budget of $115,000,000 film grossed $274,703,340 worldwide.

Two years later studio released a sequel named Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life which grossed $156,505,388 with a budget of $95,000,000. It was even claimed as a critical improvement over its predecessor.

Lara Croft reboot

In 2011, GK Films acquired the film rights and plan to release an origin story reboot. And again script started moving from hand to hands, first it was given to Marti Noxon, then to Evan Daugherty, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and eventually Geneva Robertson-Dworet was hired to finish the story on paper.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ star Daisy Ridley was considered for the leading role but thanks god it didn’t happen as she has done an awful work in Star Wars. Eventually, it was confirmed that Alicia Vikander had signed on to play the lead role, and Roar Uthaug had hired as a director.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander is a Swedish actress and former dancer, who in 2014 and 2015 achieved global recognition and acclaim for her roles as activist Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth. She mostly known for her roles in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Jason Bourne. She was even eyed to portray Agatha Christie…
