The story was extremely confusing and didn’t make sense for the most part. Character motivations were essentially non-existent, and the reasons that were established were very weak. It was as though someone gave up on the project somewhere in the middle. Van Damme, who is still my hero, looked to be very out of condition, and just casually (and continually) hook kicked (and struggling at that) his way to an easy pay check. Either that or he was given a single take for every scene he was in and that was it. I can’t help but feel directors and choreographers don’t know what to do with the guy these days. Personally, I think he has a strong, loyal fan base that he is letting down with work like this. He proved to the haters that he can act with JCVD, but I don’t think anybody has high expectations of him in that regard, but physically, he hasn’t been doing his job. Yen, Chan, and even Stallone are older guys really setting an example, and basically JCVD needs to do the training/dieting/therapy to continue to be credible lest he goes the way of Seagal – heaven forbid! As for Cung Le, who is an awesome fighter who hasn’t quite adapted his movement to screen yet, I don’t think Dragon eyes did a great deal to build his on screen presence as a leading man. He was much better handled in the Asian productions he has done, and I’m really looking forward to checking him out in The Grandmasters. What I will say was the film looked pretty cool for a DTV and was impressed with some of the shots and style – some groovy cinematography, and the soundtrack was pretty cool too. I have a feeling someone took a page out of the Korean guide to making awesome action cinema in that respect. All that being said, I wouldn’t go out of my way to see Dragon Eyes, but if it is there and you are looking for very passive entertainment, go for it!
