David Leitch will be helming the Charlize Theron action movie The Coldest City, which is based on a script by Kurt Johnstad, that follows the narrative inspired by author Antony Johnston’s 2012 Oni Press graphic novel publication in which a super spy forced into action to retrieve a list in order to protect the intel community when the MI6 agent smuggling it to the West is killed just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The mission becomes a deadly game of double-crossing agents and global agendas.
The biggest movie hit for Leitch is John Wick but his extensive credits include Ninja Assassin, The Mechanic, Speed Racer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hitman: Agent 47 to name a few.
Originally, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were to direct The Coldest City, but now each project will see the two men conducting the films separately. There are no hard feelings between the two as Leitch still acts as an executive producer on John Wick 2.
Focus has wrapped up a near eight-figure deal for North American rights to The Coldest City. Theron is producing through her Denver and Delilah Productions banner along with Oni Press and Sierra Pictures. Focus Features has committed to a wide release of the film, which is budgeted around $30 million. Writer Kurt Johnstad is best known for the 300 franchise and Act of Valor.
No further cast members have been confirmed yet, but with shooting slated to begin in just one month, we should hear about more cast members signing on in the very near future.
The Coldest City begins filming in Budapest on November 16 before heading out to Berlin.
