Kickboxer Vengeance

The buzz around Kickboxer Vengeance gave a green light to Kickboxer Retaliation which is already in production in Los Angeles and in June will move to Asia.

Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, known for his role as The Mountain on Game of Thrones TV show, will play the main villain. The latest addition to the cast is UFC fighter Paige VanZant. The role was specifically written for her after creators watched her on this season of “Dancing With The Stars.”

She will play the role of Gamon, a skilled fighter who also has excellent shooting ability as well as criminal connections.

“Paige is the up-and-coming darling of the UFC and her star quality shines through on camera,” producer Rob Hickman said in a statement. “She’s a tremendous asset to the film both as an onscreen talent and as a trained fighter.”

Kickboxer remake crew is giving a press conference in Bangkok.

Kickboxer gets Gina Carano as a fight promoter in the film. No wonder! This is a second project for Gina and director John Stockwell after In the Blood movie.

Great news! Darren Shahlavi joins the cast as Eric Sloan, the ill-fated brother of Kickboxer hero Alain Moussi’s character, and it is his character and his interaction with the dastardly Tong Po played by Dave Bautista that drives the story.

Here is some tweets from the cast:

Alain: “Just had fight rehearsals with Georges St Pierre and TJ Storm. The action just keeps on coming!”

Larnell Stovall: “Great job Dave Bautista you made the choreography look easy and brutal! Hope to link up again for more destruction in the future!”

Dave Bautista: “Pleasure was all mine! You and your team are first class pros all the way around! Continued success my friend.”

Georges St Pierre: “Last training session before heading down to New Orleans to begin filming my part in the movie remake of Kickboxer”.

Alain: “Thanks to producers Dimitri Logothetis and Nick Celozzi for believing in me! Awesome fight rehearsal with Dave Bautista and Larnell Stovall tonight!”

THR reports that Jean-Claude Van Damme will be playing Alain Moussi’s “mentor” in Kickboxer. Here’s what Radar Films’ Ted Field had to say: “We are so excited to have Kickboxer roll into production and to have JCVD in the role of Master Chow, passing the torch to Alain, to have him lead the franchise to a new generation.” The film begins shooting this week in New Orleans and will also have a later shoot in Thailand.

Hong Kong’s Stephen Fung is no longer directing the film. Instead, John Stockwell is taking over directing duties. Meanwhile Dave Bautista and Alain Moussi had an awesome fight rehearsal under Larnell Stovall supervision.

Tony Jaa has dropped out of Stephen Fung’s Kickboxer remake. On his Twitter Jaa said: “Unfortunately Kickboxer has changed production schedule to a period where I won’t be available. Wish them success for a cool film.”

During a Q&A session at the recent Seni Event, Adkins confirmed that he won’t be in the Kickboxer remake. He was offered the role of the brother, but explained that after reading the script and realizing just how much of a small role it was, with very little action involved, he didn’t feel like it was a role which would suit either him or his fanbase, so decided to turn it down.

Good news! The upcoming remake of the classic Kickboxer movie got Larnell Stovall as a fighting choreographer. Larnell is no stranger to the genre having did the incredible choreography for Undisputed 3 and Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning.

The project should draw keen interest at the Cannes Film Market, where Brian O’Shea’s will begin shopping the film to foreign buyers later this week.

Producer Ted Field of Radar Pictures has been plotting the remake for a year, signing Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Fung to direct. Fung’s credits include the wildly popular Chinese martial arts movies Tai Chai Zero and Tai Chi Hero.

Kickboxer also has signed stuntman and martial artist Alain Moussi as its lead. Moussi has worked in a number of Hollywood event films, including Fox’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. His credits include Pacific Rim and White House Down.

“Alain is a star and will be an amazing leading man,” said Field. “Like Vin Diesel in Riddick, Alain will make this movie very special, and this Kickboxer will be the start of an amazing franchise.”

WWE star Dave Bautista and UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre are rumoured to join remake too.

Kickboxer remake

Kickboxer tells the story of David and Kurt Sloan, the descendants of a well-known Venice, Calif., fighting dynasty. When David wins the Karate World Championship, a promoter lures him to Hong Kong, despite his brother’s protestations that the man is a crook. When Kurt travels to Thailand to meet his brother, he discovers he has died and seeks his revenge.

“We have a visionary director, a strong Hollywood producer, great cast and an action-packed script based on a well-known property,” said O’Shea. “What more can you ask for?”

Dimitri Logothetis and Nick Celozzi Jr. are also producers. Mike Weber and Peter Meyer are executive producing alongside O’Shea and the Exchange’s Jeff Bowler and Nat McCormick.

A year ago Albert Pyun was going to turn the Kickboxer into web series, now Hong Kong director Stephen Fung known by Tai Chi Zero/Hero movies is going to film a remake of Van Damme’s classic martial arts film.

Fung sat down with TIMEOUT HONG KONG and spilled some details on the remake:

Timeout HK: There’s been a lot of buzz about your new film. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Stephen Fung: Well, it’s a remake of Kickboxer, and it’s also going to be called Kickboxer. Right now, the script is ready, so we are ready to move on to the next stage and start casting. It’s an English language movie and it’s going to be set in Thailand. We’re hoping to get a larger Western appeal from this film.

Timeout HK: Are we talking Hollywood?

Stephen Fung: Kickboxer is a Hollywood film, so I would hope so.

Timeout HK: What inspired you to remake this movie?

Stephen Fung: It’s a film that I really enjoyed watching when I was young. Growing up in Hong Kong, you get exposed to a lot of martial arts films and we make a lot of good ones, so we have a pretty high standard. The movies that were coming in from Hollywood at that time were not very good, except Kickboxer, which was one of the good ones. Van Damme is a trained martial artist, so his moves look authentic in the film. We are not just going to do a direct remake. There has to be something of importance that warrants a remake. I hope it’s going to be a challenging experience.

Timeout HK: So is Van Damme going to have a cameo in the film?

Stephen Fung: Maybe… nothing is confirmed just quite yet.

Timeout HK: Compared to your previous films, what’s going to be different with your approach on Kickboxer?

Stephen Fung: Style-wise, this movie is going to have a gritty tone. With Tai Chi 0, we were trying to achieve something that was more family friendly because there are not a lot of those films in the Mainland. We wanted something like National Treasure to cater toward a younger audience. For the next film, it’s probably going to be something more brutal and mature.
