Warner Bros. has revealed the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections. The movie is set for release on Dec. 22 in theaters and on HBO Max and in a clever marketing spin, the tag line in posters is “The Choice is Yours”.

Within an hour of being posted, the trailer had nearly 1 million views on YouTube alone. Footage of the new film, produced, co-written, and directed by Lana Wachowski, was first shown at CinemaCon, where it blew the doors off the industry trade show.

The last time we saw Neo, he had sacrificed himself. In the first Matrix, Neo discovers that what he perceives as the real world is actually the Matrix, a space controlled by sentient machines to subdue humans. He breaks out of the Matrix and discovers that he is “the One,” a prophesied powerful figure. But he’s hunted down by Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), a program designed to police humans within the Matrix.

Fans are already excited by the prospect of returning to many of the most famous moments from the original film. But knowing Lana Wachowski, the parallels between the two movies don’t just exist for the sake of fan service. They’re almost certainly making a larger philosophical point.

The Matrix Resurrections also stars Jada Pinkett Smith (returning to the franchise) along with series newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci.
